Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok, widely regarded as the greatest League of Legends player ever, is about to become the first inductee into the new Hall of Legends, essentially the LoL hall of fame. To mark this occasion, a special bundle of skins is being released, but fans are upset about the steep $500-$600 price tag.
To celebrate Faker’s induction, a new in-game event is launching in League of Legends. This event features a pass with various cosmetics themed around Faker that players can unlock. Additionally, a new skin for the champion Ahri is being released in Faker’s honor, which is where the controversy arises.
The skin bundle is available at three different price points. For 5430 RP (about $40), you get the basic version of the skin, the Ahri champion, the event pass, a taunt, border, icon, and emote. The mid-tier option costs 32430 RP (around $300) and adds some visual and audio effects to the skin. The top-tier version, priced at 59260 RP (approximately $500), includes extra effects and animations, all 100 levels of the event pass unlocked, and Chromas for other champions.
Riot has confirmed that RP bundles matching these specific amounts will be available during the event, so players won't need to buy more RP than necessary.
Fans are understandably disappointed with the $500 price for the top-tier skin, but there's also backlash over the high costs of all tiers, with even the basic bundle being much more expensive than typical LoL skins.
Anticipating criticism, Riot Games added an FAQ to the skins' webpage explaining the price structure. They described the basic level as one of their most generous bundles ever, aiming to offer something for everyone. The FAQ emphasized that the more expensive versions are meant to be highly commemorative, with unique features.
Most fan responses on social media have been negative, with the game's sub-Reddit buzzing with complaints about the pricing. Many fans feel the prices are a major misstep, with some even thinking the high costs were a typo.
While the top-tier skin is clearly aimed at the biggest spenders, the other tiers are also too expensive for many players. This has disappointed many fans who wanted to celebrate one of the most beloved players in the world but can't afford even the cheapest option.
If you want to purchase any cosmetics from the event, you need to act fast, as they are only available until July 8 ir in our skin page.
